Volcanoes
• The word volcano is derived from the name of
‘Vulcano’, a volcanic island in the Aeolian
Islands of Italy whose name in turn originates
from ‘Vulcan’, the name of a god of fire in
Roman mythology.
• Volcano is a vent or an opening through which
heated materials consisting of water, gases,
liquid lava and rock fragments are erupted
from the highly heated interior to the surface of
the Earth. The layer below the solid crust of
earth is mantle.

• Vulcanicity includes all those processes in
which molten rock material or magma
rises to the crust to solidify as crystalline
or semi-crystalline rocks. Some scientists
use ‘vulcanism’ as a synonym for
vulcanicity.

Causes of Vulcanism
• Magma is formed due to the lowering of melting point,
which in turn is caused by the reduction in pressure of the
overlying material.
• Gases and vapour are formed due to heating of water, which
reaches underground through percolation.
• The ascent of magma forced by vast volume of gases and
water vapour.
• The occurrence of volcanic eruption.

FAQs on PPT: Volcanism - Crash Course for UPSC Aspirants

1. What is volcanism?
Ans. Volcanism refers to the process of volcanic activity, where molten rock, known as magma, is ejected from a volcano onto the Earth's surface. It involves the release of gases, ash, and lava, leading to the formation of volcanic cones, craters, and other volcanic landforms.
2. How are volcanoes formed?
Ans. Volcanoes are formed when there is a rupture in the Earth's crust, allowing molten rock from the mantle, known as magma, to reach the surface. This magma, which is less dense than the surrounding rocks, rises to the surface through cracks and vents, eventually forming a volcano.
3. What are the different types of volcanic eruptions?
Ans. Volcanic eruptions can be categorized into several types based on their explosiveness and the type of magma involved. Some common types include effusive eruptions, where lava flows steadily from the volcano, and explosive eruptions, where highly viscous magma causes violent explosions.
4. What are the main hazards associated with volcanic eruptions?
Ans. Volcanic eruptions can pose several hazards, including pyroclastic flows (fast-moving currents of hot gas, ash, and rock fragments), lahars (mudflows triggered by volcanic activity), volcanic ashfall, volcanic gases (such as sulfur dioxide), and lava flows. These hazards can have detrimental impacts on human settlements, ecosystems, and air quality.
5. How can volcanic eruptions be monitored and predicted?
Ans. Volcanic eruptions can be monitored using various techniques, including seismometers to detect volcanic earthquakes, gas analyzers to measure gas emissions, satellite imagery for thermal monitoring, and ground deformation measurements. Despite these monitoring efforts, accurately predicting volcanic eruptions remains challenging, and scientists primarily rely on patterns of volcanic activity and warning signs to issue timely alerts and evacuation orders.
