• Why in news? 
A space capsule built to ferry 
astronauts to the International Space 
Station (ISS) has failed its first test 
flight, and will now return to earth 
without completing its mission. 
Background
After the retirement of Space Shuttle in 
2011, the NASA has been dependent on 
Russian rockets launching from Kazakhstan in 
Soyuz capsules for sending Astronauts to the 
International Space Station. 
NASA has contracts with Boeing and SpaceX 
to build spacecraft to ferry astronauts to and 
from the ISS.

Failure of Boeing’s Effort
Boeing had developed a crew capsule 
called Starliner for the purpose of sending 
humans to ISS. 
In Dec 2019, The United Launch Alliance 
Atlas V rocket lifted off successfully, and 
Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner separated as 
expected. 
The Starliner, after a series of orbital 
adjustments was to be on course for 
rendezvous and docking with the space 
station..
