• China announced tariff exemption for 97 per
cent of exports from Bangladesh.
• Aggressive economic diplomacy of China with
Indian neighbours.
• These exemptions are in addition to existing
ones under Asia Pacific Trade Agreement
(APTA).
Asia Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA)
• A preferential trading arrangement designed
to liberalise and expand trade in goods
progressively in the Asia and Pacific (ESCAP)
region.
• Initiative under the United Nations Economic
and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(UN ESCAP)
• In force since 1975.
• Members - India, Bangladesh, Republic of
Korea, Sri Lanka, Lao PDR & China.
• Aims to promote economic development through
the adoption of mutually beneficial trade
liberalisation measures.
• UNESCAP functions as APTA secretariat.
• Objectives
1. To promote and sustain mutual trade
2. To develop economic co-operation among
contracting countries.
The South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA)
• FTA of the South Asian Association for
Regional Cooperation (SAARC) – in 2006.
• Signatory countries are Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sr
