Sea in Greece; as a counter, France sent its
warships to assist Greece.
• Reason – discovery of natural gas deposits.

Leviathan fields rich in natural gas.
• EastMed Pipeline project – Deal between
Israel, Greece and Cyprus.
? Transport gas through pipeline from
Mediterranean waters till Greece; from
Greece to the rest of Europe by land.

Forum 
? Members - Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel,

? Regional cooperation platform for developing

Present Scenario
• An alliance is emerging among Greece, Cyprus,
Italy and France.
? Backed by Egypt, Israel and the UAE.
• Turkey is almost isolated.
• Potential to involve more countries from Europe,
West Asia and North Africa, especially the EU.
? European Union has each invested for the
planning works in MedEast pipeline project
– will reduce the dependence of oil from
Russia.

• Need to reduce tensions to avoid open conflict
in Mediterranean region and arrive at a
diplomatic and mutually acceptable solution.
• Excluding Turkey is unwise.
• Disastrous, if Turkey is allowed to bully and
take advantage of the smaller countries in this
region.
• EU has to strike a balance.
