CONSERVATION EFFORTS 
PROJECT TIGER 
Project Tiger was launched by the Government 
of India in the year 1973 to save the 
endangered species of tiger in the country.  
In 1973, the project was launched in the 
Corbett National Park of Uttarakhand. 
 Starting from nine (9) reserves in 1973-2016 
the number is grown up to fifty (50).  
 A total area of 71027.10 km
2
 is covered by 
these project tiger areas.

Project Tiger is an ongoing Centrally Sponsored 
Scheme of the Ministry of Environment and 
Forests, providing central assistance to the 
tiger States for tiger conservation in 
designated tiger reserves. 
The National Tiger Conservation Authority 
(NTCA) is a statutory body of the Ministry, 
with an overarching supervisory / 
coordination role, performing functions as 
provided in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 
1972.

CORBETT NATIONAL PARK 
Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India and was 
established in 1936 as Hailey National Park to protect 
the endangered Bengal tiger.  
It is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named 
after Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment.  
The park was the first to come under the Project Tiger initiative 
The altitude of the region ranges between 360 m and 1,040 m. 
 It has numerous ravines, ridges, minor streams and 
small plateaus with varying aspects and degrees of slope.
 
 The park encompasses the Patli Dun valley formed by the Ramganga 
river. 
 It protects parts of the Upper Gangetic Plains moist deciduous 
forests and Himalayan subtropical pine forests ecoregions.  
It has a humid subtropical and highland climate.
