INTRODUCTION 
 The Asiatic Lion, endemic to Gir landscape of 
Gujarat, is one of the 21 critically endangered 
species identified by the Ministry for taking 
up recovery programmes.   
Asiatic Lion, being listed in Schedule-I of 
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, to be 
accorded the highest degree of protection.

INTRODUCTION 
The last census (14
th
 census) in the year 2015 (last 
in 2010) showed the population of 523 Asiatic 
Lions (27% increase, from 411) in Gir Protected 
Area Network of 1648.79 sq. km. that includes Gir 
National Park, Gir Sanctuary, Pania Sanctuary, 
Mitiyala Sanctuary adjoining reserved forests, 
Protected Forests, and Unclassed Forests.  
IUCN Status – Endangered
