Decimals
Introduction
? In this chapter we shall learn about another kind of 
numbers called decimals.
? This has close links with the previous chapter on fractions, 
as we shall soon see.
? We denote one tenth of the whole as 1/10 or as 0.1 in 
decimal system.
? We denote one hundredth part as 0.01 in decimal system.
? Thus if we wish to write 32 and four-tenths in decimals we 
shall write it as 32.4 !

Points to notice 
? Like we don't give value to the zeros added to the left of 
integers, zeros added to the right of decimals have no value 
! 
? Example, 0.1=0.10=0.100=...... 0.10000000.... 
? But Zeros added immediately after the decimal point, are 
to be given importance . 
? For example, 0.1 is not same as 0.01 ! 
? If there is a zero before the decimal point, it is dropped in 
the notation ! Example 0.123 can be written as .123 !

? Like integers and fractions, decimals can also be 
represented in the number line.
? We first decide into how many parts should we divide the 
successive points in the number line.
? If there are 2 digits after the decimal point, we make 100 
divisions, if there are 3 digits then we make 1000 divisions 
and so on.
? We can go on magnifying the number line to get more and 
more decimals .

Ans. To read decimals, we first say the whole number part, followed by the word "and," and then read the fractional part as a regular number. For example, 3.5 is read as "three and five-tenths" and 0.75 is read as "zero and seventy-five hundredths."
3. How do you compare decimals?
Ans. To compare decimals, we start from the left and compare each digit. If the leftmost digits are equal, we move to the next digit towards the right. If one decimal has a larger digit in any place value, it is greater. For example, 2.34 is greater than 2.3.
4. How do you add and subtract decimals?
Ans. To add or subtract decimals, we line up the decimal points and add or subtract the digits in each place value. If the digits in a place value add up to more than 9, we carry over to the next place value. For example, to add 2.3 and 1.7, we get 4.0.
5. How do you multiply and divide decimals?
Ans. To multiply decimals, we multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers and then count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal point in the original numbers. That many digits should be to the right of the decimal point in the product. To divide decimals, we move the decimal point in the divisor and dividend to the right until the divisor becomes a whole number, then divide as usual.
