 Introduction
The female reproductive tract is structurally and physiologically very malleable, serving to
help attract the male during courtship, produce ova for fertilization and nourish the embryo.
Like male, the female reproductive system consists of the sex organs, the genital ducts
and the external genitalia. The sex organs in females are the ovaries. The genital ducts
of females are- the uterine (fallopian) tubes, or oviducts; the uterus; the cervix; the
vagina. The female external genitalia constitutes the vulva, or pudendum. The
mammary glands are also considered a part of the female reproductive system. Figure 1
illustrates the structures of the female genital tract.

FAQs on Lecture 6 - Female Reproductive System:Structure of organs and Duct System ( part 1 ) - Animal Physiology and Functional Histology- I - MBBS

1. What are the main organs of the female reproductive system?
Ans. The main organs of the female reproductive system include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. These organs work together to produce and transport eggs, support fertilization, and nurture a developing fetus.
2. How is the structure of the uterus different from the cervix?
Ans. The uterus is a muscular organ located in the lower abdomen, while the cervix is the narrow lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The uterus is larger and has a thick lining that sheds during menstruation, while the cervix is smaller and contains a narrow opening called the cervical canal.
3. What is the role of the fallopian tubes in the female reproductive system?
Ans. The fallopian tubes are responsible for transporting eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. They are lined with cilia, which help move the eggs along through peristalsis. Fertilization of the egg by sperm usually occurs in the fallopian tubes.
4. How does the duct system of the female reproductive system function?
Ans. The duct system of the female reproductive system includes the fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina. The fallopian tubes transport eggs from the ovaries to the uterus, where fertilization can occur. The uterus then supports the growth of a fertilized egg and eventually contracts to expel the baby during childbirth. The vagina serves as the birth canal and also allows for sexual intercourse.
5. What is the significance of the ovaries in the female reproductive system?
Ans. The ovaries are the primary reproductive organs in females, responsible for producing eggs and releasing hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. They are located on either side of the uterus and play a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, fertility, and the development of secondary sexual characteristics.
