Reaction of Acetaldehyde with HCN and Hydrolysis

Acetaldehyde is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CHO. HCN is hydrogen cyanide, a highly toxic and volatile liquid. When acetaldehyde reacts with HCN, the following reaction takes place:

CH3CHO + HCN → CH3CH(OH)CN

The product obtained after the reaction is hydrolyzed to give:

CH3CH(OH)CN + H2O → CH3CHO + HCN

This reaction is an example of nucleophilic addition reaction.

Product Exhibits Enantiomerism

The product obtained after the hydrolysis of CH3CH(OH)CN exhibits enantiomerism. Enantiomers are a pair of molecules that are mirror images of each other but cannot be superimposed on each other.

In the product, the carbon atom attached to the hydroxyl group and the cyano group is chiral, meaning it has four different groups attached to it. Therefore, the product exists in two enantiomeric forms, which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other.

Each enantiomer has the same chemical and physical properties except for the direction in which it rotates the plane of polarized light. One enantiomer will rotate the plane of polarized light in a clockwise direction, while the other will rotate it in a counterclockwise direction.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the reaction of acetaldehyde with HCN followed by hydrolysis gives a product that exhibits enantiomerism. This is because the product has a chiral carbon atom attached to the hydroxyl group and the cyano group. The two enantiomers of the product are non-superimposable mirror images of each other and have different optical properties.
