Benzoin Condensation

The reaction in which aromatic aldehydes in the presence of cyanide ion as catalyst, are converted into acyloins is called Benzoin Condensation.

Mechanism:

Step 1: Formation of cyanohydrin

Cyanide ion attacks the carbonyl carbon of the aldehyde, and a cyanohydrin is formed. This is an addition reaction.

Step 2: Formation of dimer

Another molecule of the cyanohydrin is formed and the catalyst is regenerated.

Step 3: Formation of acyloin

The dimer undergoes a dehydration reaction to form the acyloin.

The overall reaction is:

Two molecules of the aldehyde react to form one molecule of the acyloin.

Applications:

This reaction is used in the synthesis of various natural and synthetic compounds. It is also used in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and fragrances.
