Benzaldehyde is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CHO. It is an important precursor to various drugs, dyes, and perfumes. When it reacts with 50% NaOH solution, it undergoes a reaction to give the corresponding alcohol and acid.

Reaction:
Benzaldehyde reacts with 50% NaOH solution to form benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate.

C6H5CHO + NaOH → C6H5CH2OH + NaC6H5COO

Mechanism:
The reaction takes place in two steps.

Step 1: Formation of Schiff's base
Benzaldehyde reacts with NaOH to form a Schiff's base.

C6H5CHO + NaOH → C6H5CH=NNa + H2O

Step 2: Hydrolysis of Schiff's base
The Schiff's base undergoes hydrolysis to give the alcohol and acid.

C6H5CH=NNa + H2O → C6H5CH2OH + NaC6H5COO

In the above reaction, the NaC6H5COO is the sodium salt of benzoic acid.

Conclusion:
Thus, benzaldehyde undergoes a reaction with 50% NaOH solution to give the corresponding alcohol and acid. This reaction is a useful method for the preparation of benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate.
