Explain nitrogen cycle with help of a diagram?
Most Upvoted Answer
Explain nitrogen cycle with help of a diagram?
Nitrogen Cycle

  • Nitrogen is an essential element for the growth and survival of all living organisms.

  • However, nitrogen gas (N2) makes up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere and is not usable by most organisms.

  • The nitrogen cycle is the process by which nitrogen is converted into various forms that can be used by living organisms.

Nitrogen Fixation

  • Nitrogen fixation is the process by which nitrogen gas is converted into ammonia (NH3) by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

  • Some plants, such as legumes, have symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria and can use the ammonia produced by the bacteria.

  • Other bacteria can also perform nitrogen fixation in soil or water.

Nitrification

  • Nitrification is the process by which ammonia is converted into nitrite (NO2-) and then into nitrate (NO3-) by nitrifying bacteria.

  • Nitrate is the most common form of nitrogen used by plants.

Assimilation

  • Assimilation is the process by which plants and animals take up nitrogen from the environment and incorporate it into organic molecules such as amino acids and nucleotides.

  • Most plants take up nitrate ions from the soil through their roots.

  • Animals obtain nitrogen by consuming plants or other animals.

Ammonification

  • Ammonification is the process by which organic nitrogen compounds are broken down into ammonia by decomposers such as bacteria and fungi.

  • The ammonia produced by ammonification can then be used in the nitrogen fixation and nitrification processes.

Denitrification

  • Denitrification is the process by which nitrate is converted back into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria.

  • This process occurs in anaerobic conditions, such as in soil or waterlogged environments.

  • Denitrification reduces the amount of available nitrogen in the environment and returns it to the atmosphere.

Overall, the nitrogen cycle is a complex process that involves a variety of biological and chemical reactions. It is essential for the proper functioning of ecosystems and the survival of living organisms.
