After nitrogen fixation, ammonia (NH3) is further transformed into nitrite (NO2-) by nitrifying bacteria. Nitrite is then converted into nitrate (NO3-) through another group of nitrifying bacteria. This process is called nitrification and occurs in soil and aquatic environments. Nitrate is the form of nitrogen that is most readily absorbed by plants.

**3. Assimilation:**

Plants take up nitrate ions from the soil through their root systems. Nitrate is then assimilated into plant tissues and is used for the synthesis of proteins, nucleic acids, and other nitrogen-containing compounds. Animals obtain nitrogen by consuming plants or other animals that have already assimilated nitrogen.

**4. Ammonification:**

Ammonification is the process by which organic nitrogen compounds, such as proteins and nucleic acids, are broken down into ammonia (NH3) by decomposer bacteria and fungi. This ammonia can then be used in the next step of the nitrogen cycle.

**5. Denitrification:**

Denitrification is the final step in the nitrogen cycle, where nitrate is converted back into nitrogen gas (N2) by denitrifying bacteria. This process occurs under anaerobic conditions, such as in waterlogged soils or sediment. Denitrification helps to return nitrogen to the atmosphere, completing the nitrogen cycle.
