Calculation of Percentage of Nitrogen in Organic Compound by Kjeldahl's Method


Step 1: Calculation of moles of HCl


  • 1 M of HCl means 1 mole of HCl in 1 liter of solution

  • 20 ml of 1 M HCl means 0.02 L of solution and 0.02 moles of HCl



Step 2: Calculation of moles of NH3


  • 1 mole of NH3 reacts with 1 mole of HCl

  • So, the moles of NH3 can be calculated as 0.02 moles of HCl



Step 3: Calculation of moles of N


  • 1 mole of NH3 contains 1 mole of N

  • So, the moles of N can be calculated as 0.02 moles of NH3



Step 4: Calculation of Percentage of Nitrogen in Organic Compound


  • 0.6 g of organic compound produces 0.02 moles of N

  • So, 1 g of organic compound will produce (0.02/0.6) moles of N

  • Percentage of Nitrogen in Organic Compound = (Moles of N produced by 1 g of organic compound) x (Molar mass of N) x 100 / (Molar mass of Organic Compound)



Therefore, by using the above formula, we can calculate the percentage of nitrogen in the organic compound.
