Difference between rational number and fraction with examples ?
Verified Answer
Difference between rational number and fraction with examples ?
A fraction is written in the form of m/n, where n is not 0 and m & n are natural numbers. For example 12/23, 10/32, 12/10, 4/21.
A rational number can also be written in the form of m/n, where n is not 0 and m & n are integers. For example 15/7, -18/13, 3/-7, -6/-12. All Fractions can be termed as Rational Numbers, however, all Rational Numbers cannot be termed as Fractions. Only those Rational Numbers in which’ and ‘n’ are positive integers are termed as Fractions.

Let, m/n be any fraction. Then, m and n are natural numbers. Since all natural numbers are also integers. Therefore, m and n are integers. Thus, the fraction m/n is the quotient of 2 integers such that m ≠ 0. Hence, m/n is a rational number. We know 12/-32 is a rational number but not a fraction because its denominator (n) is not a natural number.

Rational Number vs Fraction

Rational numbers and fractions are closely related mathematical concepts but differ in their definitions and representations.

Rational Number:
- A rational number is any number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers, where the denominator is not zero.
- Rational numbers can be written in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not equal to zero.
- Examples of rational numbers are 3/4, -2/5, 7/1, etc.
- Rational numbers can be positive, negative, or zero.

Fraction:
- A fraction is a numerical quantity that is not a whole number and is represented as a ratio of two integers.
- Fractions consist of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number), separated by a horizontal line.
- Examples of fractions are 1/2, 3/5, 7/8, etc.
- Fractions can be proper (numerator is less than the denominator), improper (numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator), or mixed (combination of a whole number and a fraction).

Key Differences:
- All fractions are rational numbers, but not all rational numbers are fractions.
- Rational numbers can include integers, but fractions are specifically ratios of two integers.
- Fractions are a subset of rational numbers that represent parts of a whole or a collection.

In conclusion, rational numbers encompass a broader category that includes fractions as a specific type of representation. Fractions are a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in areas like arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
