An elastic body is subjected to a tensile stress X in a particular direction and a compressive stressY in its perpendicular direction. X and Y are unequal in magnitude. On the plane of maximumshear stress in the body there will be
  • a)
    no normal stress
  • b)
    also the maximum normal stress
  • c)
    the minimum normal stress
  • d)
    both normal stress and shear
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

An elastic body is subjected to a tensile stress X in a particular dir...
Explanation:
When a body is subjected to tensile stress X in one direction and compressive stress Y in its perpendicular direction, then the stresses acting on the body can be represented as shown in the figure below:

https://www.edurev.in/api/img/content/2821412/image.png" />

On the plane of maximum shear stress, the stresses acting on the body are shear stress and normal stresses. Let us consider a small element on the plane of maximum shear stress as shown in the figure below:

https://www.edurev.in/api/img/content/2821412/image.png" />

The stresses acting on this element can be resolved into normal and shear stresses as shown in the figure below:

https://www.edurev.in/api/img/content/2821412/image.png" />

From the figure, we can see that the normal stresses acting on the element are not equal and the shear stress acting on the element is maximum. Hence, on the plane of maximum shear stress in the body, there will be both normal stress and shear stress.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

An elastic body is subjected to a tensile stress X in a particular dir...
In the plane (@45 degree to X)where shear stress is maximum , the shear stress is the difference between two principal stresses and in normal stress in the same plane  is the sum of two principal stresses . so in that plane both (normal and shear stress ) will occur . note : in the plane where normal stress is max shear stress is zero
