Activity to show exosmosis and Endomosis in raisin?
Activity to show exosmosis and endosmosis in raisins

Materials required

  • Raisins

  • Glass of water

  • Salt

Procedure

  1. Take two identical raisins and place them in two different glasses of water.

  2. In one glass, add a pinch of salt and stir it until it dissolves.

  3. Leave the raisins in the glasses for a few hours.

Observations

  • After a few hours, the raisin in the plain water will swell up and become larger in size due to the process of endosmosis.

  • The raisin in the salt water will shrink and become smaller in size due to the process of exosmosis.

Explanation

Endosmosis is the process by which water molecules move from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. In the case of the raisin in plain water, the water molecules move from the glass of water into the raisin, causing it to swell up and become larger in size. This is because the raisin has a higher concentration of solutes than the plain water, so the water molecules move into the raisin to dilute the solutes.

Exosmosis is the process by which water molecules move from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. In the case of the raisin in salt water, the water molecules move from the raisin into the glass of salt water, causing the raisin to shrink and become smaller in size. This is because the salt water has a higher concentration of solutes than the raisin, so the water molecules move out of the raisin to dilute the solutes.

Conclusion

This activity demonstrates the processes of endosmosis and exosmosis in raisins. The movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane depends on the concentration of solutes on either side of the membrane. Endosmosis occurs when the solute concentration is higher inside the cell, while exosmosis occurs when the solute concentration is higher outside the cell.
