Calculation of Percentage Increase in Discharge

When a similar pipe is added in parallel to an existing pipe, the total discharge increases. The percentage increase in discharge can be calculated as follows:

  • Let the original discharge be Q1 and the discharge through the new pipe be Q2.

  • The total discharge after the addition of the new pipe is Q1 + Q2.

  • Since the new pipe is added for half the length of the total pipeline, the discharge through the new pipe is also half of the original discharge, i.e., Q2 = 0.5Q1.

  • Substituting the value of Q2 in the total discharge equation, we get:

  • Total discharge = Q1 + 0.5Q1 = 1.5Q1

  • The percentage increase in discharge is given by:

  • Percentage increase = ((Total discharge - Original discharge) / Original discharge) x 100%

  • Substituting the values, we get:

  • Percentage increase = ((1.5Q1 - Q1) / Q1) x 100%

  • Percentage increase = (0.5Q1 / Q1) x 100%

  • Percentage increase = 50%

Therefore, the percentage increase in discharge is 50%.

The addition of a new pipe in parallel to the existing pipe increases the cross-sectional area of the pipeline, which in turn increases the discharge. Since the new pipe is added for half the length of the total pipeline, the discharge through the new pipe is also half of the original discharge. Substituting the values in the formula, we get the percentage increase in discharge as 50%. This increase in discharge can help in meeting the increased demand for water in the city and improve the efficiency of the pipeline system.
