2.LORD ULLIN'S DAUGHTER------The poem ‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’ is written in theform of a ballad by Thomas Campbell. Like all ballads ittells a story, but the story is of two unfortunate lovers, whose story ends in a tragedy.A Scottish chieftain of Ulva’s Isle falls in love withLord Ullin’s daughter. Lord Ullin was simply disgustedwith the alliance, so the lovers run away to escape thewrath of Lord Ullin. The lovers are chased on horse-backby Lord Ullin and his men. The lovers reach the shore ofa tempestuous sea. The chieftain asks the boatman to rowthem to the other shore. He tells the boatman that he andhis beloved would not be left alive if the boatman does nothelp them. The boatman is reluctant at first because of thetempest in the sea. Later he agrees to undertake the deadlyvoyage because he is awed by the girl’s beauty. He alsorejects the chieftain's offer of a pound of silver. As the boat enters the tempestuous waters, the stormgrows more fierce, the waves rise very high. Soon thestorm grows fiercer and the waves get menacing. Forcefulwind and the raging water sink the boat. Lord Ullin’sdaughter raises one hand for help and puts the other armaround her lover. Meanwhile Lord Ulllin reaches the shoreand helplessly watches his daughter perish in the ragingwater before his eyes. His ‘come-back’ call and a promiseof forgiveness prove to be of no avail because the loversperish in the sea. Lord Ullin is full of remorse and regretbut that proves futile after the death of his dear daughter.

1.THEME OF SEVEN AGES---------Through Jacques, Shakespeare puts forth the view thatthe world is a stage in which human beings play their part. There are seven Acts like seven stages in a man’s life. Aperson performs multifarious roles in a single life-time. Inthe beginning, he is a baby crying in the arms of the nurse.Infancy is followed by school-going stage, when he isbright-eyed, trudging unwillingly to school. In the thirdstage, he grows into a lover, writing poems in praise of hisbeloved and sighing like a furnace. Then he plays the roleof a soldier, who is rash, and who willingly sacrifices hislife for honour. In the next role he is a Judge, well-fed,prosperous, fat and fierce-eyed. He is always in a mood ofimpressing others and is full of wise maxims. The next stage depicts man to be weak, thin, wearingspectacles and slippers. His clothes are loose and legs arethin and his voice is shrill like that of a child. At the endcomes the last stage when he loses his memory, teeth, eyes, taste, infact everything. It is like a second childhoodas he has to depend on others for everything. Thus endsthe drama of his eventful life.
