Price Elasticity of Demand

Price elasticity of demand measures the responsiveness of demand to a change in price. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.

Formula:
Price Elasticity of Demand = (% Change in Quantity Demanded) / (% Change in Price)

Given that the price elasticity of demand for a good is (-) 3, we know that the demand for the good is price elastic. This means that a change in price will lead to a proportionally larger change in quantity demanded.

Calculation

Initial price (P1) = Rs. 10
New price (P2) = Rs. 12
Change in price (ΔP) = P2 - P1 = Rs. 2
Average price (P1 + P2) / 2 = (10 + 12) / 2 = Rs. 11

Using the midpoint method, we can calculate the percentage change in price as follows:

% Change in Price = (ΔP / Average Price) x 100
% Change in Price = (2 / 11) x 100 = 18.18%

Since the price elasticity of demand is (-) 3, we can use the absolute value to find the percentage change in quantity demanded:

% Change in Quantity Demanded = 3 x % Change in Price
% Change in Quantity Demanded = 3 x 18.18% = 54.54%

Therefore, the percentage change in demand for the good is 60% (rounded to the nearest whole number).

Answer: (d) 60 percent
