In an innings of a T20 cricket match (a team can bowl for 20 overs) 6 howlers bowled from the fielding side, with a bowler allowed maximum of 4 overs. Only the three specialist bowlers bowled their full quota of 4 overs each, and the remaining 8 overs were shared among three non-specialist bowlers. The economy rates of four bowlers were 6, 6, 7 and 9 respectively. (Economy rate is the total number a/runs conceded by - a bowler divided by the number of overs bowled by that bowler). This however, does not include the dab of the best bowler (lowest economy rate) and the worst bowler (highest economy rate). The number of overs bowled and the economy rate of any bowler are in integers.
Read the two statements below;
S1: The worst bowler did not bowl the minimum number of overs.
S2: The best bowler is a specialist bowler.

  • c)
    Either S1 or S2
  • d)

Verified Answer
In an innings of a T20 cricket match (a team can bowl for 20 overs) 6 ...
Overs bowled by specialist bowlers =12. Overs bowled by non specialist bowlers = 8.
Since there are 8 overs, so maximum a bowler can bowl is 3 overs. So 3, 3, 2 is the only breakup of 8 overs. Hence non specialist bowler can bowl a minimum of 2 overs. Hence statement S1 or S2 are not required.

In an innings of a T20 cricket match (a team can bowl for 20 overs) 6 ...
Understanding the Problem
In a T20 match, a total of 20 overs are bowled, with 6 overs being 'howlers' (no-balls or wides). The distribution of overs is as follows:
- Three specialist bowlers each bowled 4 overs (total 12 overs).
- The remaining 8 overs were bowled by three non-specialist bowlers.
Given the economy rates of four bowlers: 6, 6, 7, and 9, we need to analyze which statements can help determine the minimum overs bowled by a non-specialist bowler.
Bowling Distribution
- Specialist Bowlers: 3 bowlers x 4 overs = 12 overs
- Non-specialist Bowlers: 8 overs to be shared among 3 bowlers
Identifying the Best and Worst Bowlers
- The best bowler has the lowest economy rate (6), while the worst bowler has the highest economy rate (9).
- Since two bowlers have an economy of 6, they could be either both specialists or one specialist and one non-specialist.
Analyzing Statements
- S1: "The worst bowler did not bowl the minimum number of overs." This statement does not provide information about the distribution of overs among non-specialists.
- S2: "The best bowler is a specialist bowler." This is likely true, given the context, but does not directly affect the calculation of minimum overs.
Conclusion
The minimum number of overs for a non-specialist bowler can be determined by simple calculations:
- Since the non-specialists must bowl a total of 8 overs and there are three of them, the minimum is at least 2 overs each if evenly distributed.
Therefore, it is concluded that the minimum number of overs can be calculated without relying on the statements S1 or S2. The correct answer is option 'E'.
