The main advantage of oxidation ditch is the ability to achieve removal performance objective with low operational requirements and eminence costs. An oxidation ditch is a modified activated sludge biological treatment process that uses long solids retention times (SRTs) to remove biodegradable organics. The typical oxidation ditch is equipped with aeration rotors or brushes that provide aeration and circulation. The wastewater moves through the ditch at 1 to 2ft/s. The ditch may be designed for continuous or intermittent operation. Because of this feature, this process may be adaptable to the fluctuations in flows and loadings associated with recreation area wastewater production. Several manufacturers have developed modifications to the oxidation ditch design to remove nutrients in conditions cycled or phased between the anoxic and aerobic states.
Oxidation ponds, also called lagoons or stabilization ponds, are large, shallow ponds designed to treat wastewater through the interaction of sunlight bacteria, and algae. Algae grow using energy from the sun and carbon dioxide and inorganic compounds released by bacteria in water. During the process of photosynthesis, the algae release oxygen needed by aerobic bacteria. Mechanical aerators are sometimes installed to supply yet more oxygen, thereby reducing the required size of the pond. Sludge deposits in the pond must eventually be removed by dredging. Algae remaining in the pond effluent can be removed by filtration or by a combination of chemical treatment and settling.

Efficiency of BOD Removal in Treatment Plants

BOD removal is an important aspect of wastewater treatment, as it indicates the amount of organic matter that is present in the water. The higher the BOD level, the more polluted the water is likely to be. There are several methods used to remove BOD from wastewater, including oxidation ditches, oxidation ponds, aerated lagoons, and trickling filters.

Efficiency of BOD Removal in Different Treatment Plants

- Oxidation Ditch: The maximum efficiency of BOD removal is achieved in an oxidation ditch. This is because an oxidation ditch provides a controlled environment that allows for the efficient treatment of wastewater. The wastewater is mixed with oxygen and other chemicals, which helps to break down the organic matter and remove the BOD. The design of an oxidation ditch is such that it provides a long retention time, which allows for the maximum amount of BOD to be removed.
- Oxidation Ponds: Oxidation ponds are another method used to remove BOD from wastewater. However, the efficiency of BOD removal in oxidation ponds is not as high as in oxidation ditches. This is because oxidation ponds are typically shallow and do not provide as much mixing and aeration as oxidation ditches. As a result, the retention time in oxidation ponds is shorter, which means that less BOD is removed.
- Aerated Lagoons: Aerated lagoons are similar to oxidation ponds, but they provide more aeration and mixing. However, the efficiency of BOD removal in aerated lagoons is still not as high as in oxidation ditches. The retention time in aerated lagoons is shorter than in oxidation ditches, which means that less BOD is removed.
- Trickling Filters: Trickling filters are a type of biological treatment that use a bed of rocks or other media to treat wastewater. As the wastewater flows over the media, bacteria and other microorganisms break down the organic matter and remove the BOD. However, the efficiency of BOD removal in trickling filters is not as high as in oxidation ditches. This is because trickling filters do not provide as much mixing and aeration as oxidation ditches, which means that the retention time is shorter and less BOD is removed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the maximum efficiency of BOD removal is achieved in an oxidation ditch. While other methods such as oxidation ponds, aerated lagoons, and trickling filters can also be used to treat wastewater, they are not as efficient in removing BOD as oxidation ditches. Therefore, oxidation ditches are often the preferred method for treating wastewater when high BOD removal efficiency is required.
