As shown in the figure, there is a square of 24 cm. A circle is inscribed inside the square. Inside the circle are four circles of equal radius which are inscribed. The total area of the shaded region in the figure given below is ________

We will solve this question in parts.
(i) Area of shaded region  
= 576 - π (12)2
= 576 - 144π
(ii) Area of shaded region  = Area of quarter circle – Area of triangle 
(iii) Area of shaded circle  
= Area of circle – Area of 2 petals
= π (6)2 – 4 (9π - 18)
= 36π - 36π + 72 = 72 
Thus area of 4 shaded circular regions = 72 × 4 = 288
Hence total shaded area of given figure = 576 - 144π+ 288 = 864 - 144π
