Reaction of Benzene with CH3Cl in the Presence of Anhydrous AlCl3

The reaction of benzene with CH3Cl in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 is a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. The reaction produces toluene as the main product.

Mechanism of the Reaction

The reaction mechanism involves the following steps:

Step 1: Formation of an intermediate carbocation

AlCl3 acts as a Lewis acid and accepts the lone pair of electrons from the chlorine atom of CH3Cl. This creates a carbocation intermediate.

CH3Cl + AlCl3 → CH3+ + AlCl4-

Step 2: Attack of benzene on the carbocation intermediate

The carbocation intermediate formed in step 1 then reacts with benzene. A nucleophilic attack by the pi electron cloud of the benzene ring on the carbocation intermediate results in the formation of a new intermediate.

CH3+ + C6H6 → C6H5CH3+

Step 3: Regeneration of the Lewis acid catalyst

The AlCl4- ion generated in step 1 acts as a Lewis base and accepts a proton from the CH3Cl molecule, thereby regenerating the AlCl3 catalyst.

AlCl4- + CH3Cl → AlCl3 + CH3Cl2-

Overall Reaction

The overall reaction can be represented as follows:

C6H6 + CH3Cl → C6H5CH3 + HCl

Conclusion

The reaction of benzene with CH3Cl in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 is a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction that produces toluene as the main product.
