DIRECTIONS for the question: Answer the question on the basis of the following information.
Eight adjacent offices completely enclose a circular central courtyard. The offices are numbered consecutively, beginning at one of the offices with 1 and proceeding clockwise to 8. Eight junior executives – J, K, L, M, N, O, P and R – are to occupy the offices, one to an office.
The assignment of offices is subject to the following restrictions:
(i) J is allowed first choice of any of the offices.
(ii) K and P must be assigned to adjacent offices.
(iii) L and P must be assigned to adjacent offices.
(iv) M and O must be assigned to adjacent offices.
(v) M and N cannot be assigned to adjacent offices.
(vi) O is assigned to office 2 unless J chooses it; in that case, O will be assigned to office 3.
(vii) K is assigned to office 7 unless J chooses it; in that case, K will be assigned to office 5.
Q. Which of the following is an assignment of executives to offices, beginning with office 1 and   proceeding consecutively to office 8, that conforms to the restrictions above?
  • a)
    J, O, M, R, L, P, K, N
  • b)
    J, R, O, M, L, P, K, N
  • c)
    M, O, N, K, P, L, R, J
  • d)
    M, O, R, J, L, K, P, N
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

We can solve this question by checking the options for the given conditions.
Using condition(vii)
K is assigned to office 7 unless J chooses it; in that case, K will be assigned to office 5.
So K has to be at position 7 unless J is at position 7. Hence option C and D are ruled out.
Using condition(vi)
O is assigned to office 2 unless J chooses it; in that case, O will be assigned to office 3.
So O has to be in second position unless J is in second position. Hence option B is ruled out.
So, option A is the answer.

Understanding the Problem
To find the correct assignment of junior executives to the offices, we must adhere to the specified restrictions while also considering the layout of the offices.
Key Restrictions
- J has the first choice of any office.
- K and P must be adjacent.
- L and P must be adjacent.
- M and O must be adjacent.
- M and N cannot be adjacent.
- O is in office 2 unless J takes it, then O goes to office 3.
- K is in office 7 unless J takes it, then K goes to office 5.
Analyzing Option A: J, O, M, R, L, P, K, N
- J in Office 1: This satisfies J's first choice.
- O in Office 2: Since J did not choose office 2, O can occupy office 2.
- M in Office 3: This satisfies the adjacency requirement with O.
- R in Office 4: There are no restrictions for R.
- L in Office 5: This allows for adjacency with P.
- P in Office 6: P is adjacent to L, satisfying the restriction.
- K in Office 7: This satisfies K's position as it is adjacent to P and fulfills all placement conditions.
- N in Office 8: N is not adjacent to M, adhering to the restriction.
Conclusion
Thus, option A: J, O, M, R, L, P, K, N conforms to all restrictions. The adjacency conditions for K with P, L with P, and M with O are maintained, and the non-adjacency condition for M and N is also satisfied.
