Guided Media:
Guided media, also known as wired media or bounded media, refers to the physical medium through which signals are transmitted. It includes cables and wires that provide a pathway for the signals to travel from one point to another. Guided media can be further classified into two categories: metallic media and optical media.

Metallic Media:
Metallic media uses electrical conductors to transmit signals. It includes twisted pair cables and coaxial cables.

1. Twisted Pair:
Twisted pair cables consist of two insulated copper wires twisted together. This twisting helps to reduce electromagnetic interference and crosstalk. Twisted pair cables are commonly used in telephone networks and local area networks (LANs).

2. Coaxial Cable:
Coaxial cables consist of a central conductor, surrounded by insulation, a metallic shield, and an outer plastic or rubber sheath. They provide better shielding and higher bandwidth compared to twisted pair cables. Coaxial cables are commonly used in cable television networks and high-speed internet connections.

Optical Media:
Optical media uses light signals to transmit information. It includes fiber optic cables.

3. Fiber Optic:
Fiber optic cables use thin strands of glass or plastic fibers to transmit data as pulses of light. They offer higher bandwidth, longer distance transmission, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Fiber optic cables are widely used in telecommunications, internet backbone networks, and high-speed data transmission.

Non-Guided Media:
Non-guided media, also known as wireless or unbounded media, refers to the transmission of signals through the air or vacuum. It does not require any physical medium. One example of non-guided media is infrared.

4. Infrared:
Infrared communication uses infrared radiation to transmit signals. It is commonly used in television remote controls, wireless keyboards, and wireless headphones. Infrared signals are line-of-sight and have limited range compared to guided media.

Conclusion:
Among the given options, the correct answer is option 'D' - Infrared. Infrared is not a guided media as it does not involve any physical medium like cables or wires to transmit signals. It is a form of non-guided or wireless media that uses infrared radiation for communication.
