Reflection and Deviation of Light

Angle between two mirrors

When a ray of light is incident on a mirror, it undergoes reflection and changes direction. If a ray of light is incident on two mirrors at an angle, it can undergo multiple reflections and change direction. If the angle between two mirrors is 60 degrees, a ray of light incident on one mirror will undergo a total deviation of 240 degrees after two reflections.

Number of images formed by two mirrors

If an object is placed symmetrically between two mirrors, the number of images formed will be 5. This is because the first reflection will create two images, and then each of those images will reflect again to create two more images each, for a total of 5. However, if the object is placed unsymmetrically between the mirrors, the number of images will still be 5.

Retracing a ray of light

If an angle of incidence on one mirror is 60 degrees, a ray of light will retrace its path after 2 successive reflections. This is because the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, and since the angle between the mirrors is 60 degrees, the angle of incidence on the second mirror will also be 60 degrees. Therefore, the angle of reflection on the second mirror will be equal to the angle of incidence on the first mirror, and the ray will retrace its path.
