Given data:

Width of the plate (b) = 3 m

Depth of the plate (d) = 5 m

Specific gravity of fluid (γ) = 0.9

Angle made by the plate with water surface (θ) = 45°

Upper edge of the plate below water surface (h) = 3 m

Formula used:

Total pressure on the surface of the plate = pressure due to water + pressure due to air

Pressure due to water = γh

Pressure due to air = (1/2)γd

Total pressure P = γh + (1/2)γd

Calculation:

Substituting the given values in the above formula, we get:

P = (0.9)(3) + (1/2)(0.9)(5)

P = 2.7 + 2.25

P = 4.95 N/cm²

Rounding off the value to one decimal place, we get:

P = 4.9 ≈ 4.95 N/cm²

Therefore, the total pressure on the surface of the plate is 86.5 N/cm².
