Two trains are moving in the same direction at the speed of 24 km/hr and 50 km/hr. The time taken by faster train to cross a man sitting in the slower train is 72 seconds. What will be the length (in metres) of the faster train?
  • a)
    560
  • b)
    490
  • c)
    520
  • d)
    640
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Two trains are moving in the same direction at the speed of 24 km/hr a...
Let the speed of fast train is Sf  and speed of slow train is Ss.
⇒ Sf  – S= (Length of fast train)/Time
⇒ 5/18 × (50 - 24) = (Length of fast train)/72
⇒ 5/18 × 26 × 72 = Length of fast train
∴ Length of fast train = 520 m

Two trains are moving in the same direction at the speed of 24 km/hr a...
Given information:
- Speed of slower train = 24 km/hr
- Speed of faster train = 50 km/hr
- Time taken by faster train to cross a man in slower train = 72 seconds

Approach:
- First, find the relative speed of the two trains.
- Then, use the formula Distance = Speed x Time to find the length of the faster train.

Calculations:
- Relative speed = Speed of faster train - Speed of slower train
= 50 km/hr - 24 km/hr
= 26 km/hr
= 26 * (5/18) m/s (Converting km/hr to m/s)
= 13/9 m/s
- Distance covered by the faster train in crossing the man in slower train = Speed x Time
= (13/9) m/s x 72 s
= 104 m

Final Answer:
The length of the faster train is 104 meters.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C) 520.
