The fine pearlite structure is observed in the region adjacent to the martensite zone. The slower cooling rate allows for the formation of smaller and more closely spaced cementite lamellae, resulting in a finer microstructure.

Coarse pearlite is another microstructure that forms when carbon steel is slowly cooled, but with a slower cooling rate than fine pearlite. It also consists of alternating layers of ferrite and cementite, but the lamellae are larger and more widely spaced compared to fine pearlite. The coarse pearlite structure is observed in the region further away from the martensite zone.

The sequence of structures observed from the center towards either side of the weldment is therefore 3 (martensite), 1 (fine pearlite), 2 (coarse pearlite). This sequence is determined by the cooling rate experienced by the steel during the welding process. The center region cools rapidly, leading to the formation of martensite, while the adjacent regions cool at slower rates, resulting in the formation of pearlite microstructures. The difference in cooling rates is responsible for the variation in the size and spacing of the cementite lamellae, leading to the differences in microstructure observed.
