Calculation of Velocity of a Car using Braking Distance and Resistance

Given

  • Mass of sedan car (m) = 200 kg

  • Braking distance (d) = 20 m

  • Average resistance (R) = 500 N

Formula

  • Kinetic Energy (KE) = (1/2)mv^2

  • Work done by Brakes (W) = Fd

  • Work done by Friction = - W

  • Work done by Friction = KE - 0 (since car comes to rest)

Solution

Using the formula for work done by brakes:

W = Fd

W = 500 x 20

W = 10000 J

Using the formula for Kinetic Energy:

KE = (1/2)mv^2

KE = (1/2) x 200 x v^2

Since the car comes to rest, work done by friction is equal to the kinetic energy of the car:

KE = W

(1/2) x 200 x v^2 = 10000

100 x v^2 = 10000

v^2 = 100

v = 10 m/s

Conclusion

The velocity of the sedan car before the application of brakes was 10 m/s.
