Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity of Oil

Given:

  • Size of square plate: 0.8×0.8m

  • Angle of inclination of inclined plane: 30°

  • Weight of square plate: 300N

  • Uniform velocity of plate: 0.3m/s

  • Thickness of oil film: 1.5mm

Formula:

  • Viscous force = Dynamic viscosity x Area of plate x Velocity gradient

  • Velocity gradient = Velocity of plate / Thickness of oil film

  • Area of plate = Length x Breadth

  • Weight of plate = Mass x Gravity

Solution:

  • Area of plate = 0.8 x 0.8 = 0.64 m^2

  • Mass of plate = Weight / Gravity = 300 / 9.8 = 30.61 kg

  • Velocity gradient = 0.3 / 0.0015 = 200 m^-1

  • Viscous force = 30.61 x 9.8 x sin 30° = 150.67 N

  • Dynamic viscosity = Viscous force / (Area of plate x Velocity gradient)

  • Dynamic viscosity = 150.67 / (0.64 x 200) = 1.17 Pa.s

Answer: The dynamic viscosity of the oil is 1.17 Pa.s.
