Introduction

In the short story "The Doll's House" by Katherine Mansfield, Kezia is a young girl who once earned her father's wrath for disobeying him. This incident throws light on her father's character and the way he views his family.

Kezia's mistake and punishment

Kezia's mistake was that she invited the Kelveys, two girls from a lower social class, to see the doll's house that her father had given her and her sisters. When her father found out about this, he was furious and demanded to know why she had done such a thing. He told her that the Kelveys were not fit to be associated with and that he did not want his daughters to have anything to do with them.

As punishment for her mistake, Kezia was sent to her room and was not allowed to go to the picnic that had been planned for that day. Her sisters were also punished by being told they could not go to the picnic.

Justification of punishment

The punishment that Kezia received was not justified. She had done nothing wrong by inviting the Kelveys to see the doll's house. In fact, her actions showed that she had a kind heart and was willing to share with others. Her father's reaction was based on his own prejudices and social status, rather than on any actual harm that had been done.

Insight into father's character

The incident shows that Kezia's father is a man who is concerned with social status and appearances. He is more concerned with what others will think of his family than with the well-being of his own daughters. He is also quick to anger and does not take the time to understand his children's motivations or feelings. Overall, this incident reveals a lot about the character of Kezia's father and the way he views the world.

Kezia earned her father’s wrath by tearing his speech that he had prepared for Port Auhtority; though Kezia did this mistake quite unintentionally, yet the father reprimanded and beat her with ruler. The punishment was not justified as Kezia had torn the speech quite unintentionally. And she had done it to make a gift for her father’s birthday.  
This shows Kezia’s father was a very strict.
