The length of a bee’s tongue is proportional to the size of the bee, but it is also true that this proportion is inherited by each bee. Furthermore, the bee tongue is usually sized to match the depth of the flower it pollinates, making it possible for the bee to drink the nectar from it. Accordingly, there are both short-tongued and long-tongued bees that drink nectar only from flowers suited to their tongue size. Such bees are called specialists and since they depend on just a few flowers, they are quite vulnerable to changes in nature.
  • a)
It is by studying the species of flower a bee pollinates that entomologists determine the exact body size of the bee and the species it belongs to.
  • b)
It is likely that a short tongued bee may have a problem drinking nectar from a flower that has a longer than average depth but a long tongued bee can easily sap the nectar of any kind of flower.
  • c)
Drastic changes in the flora of a land could affect the existence of certain bee species.
  • d)
The type of honey produced by the bees depends heavily on the flowers they pollinate.
  • e)
Across various bee species, the kind of flower a particular type of bee pollinates is exclusive from that pollinated by another type of bee.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

If the information given above is true, then which of the following can be concluded from it?
Argument Analysis
Pre-Thinking
Conclusion Clarification
N/ A
Pre-Thinking Approach
In order to see which statement can be best supported by the passage, we would need to observe all the facts given in the argument and see what must also be true if the information in the passage is true. Please note that the inference/conclusion must be based only on the given information.
Inferences:
  • From fact 2 (ref.: logical structure)
    • Inference1: The size of the bee’s tongue and the depth of the flower it pollinates are mostly linked to each other.
  • Combining facts 3 & 4(ref.: logical structure)
    • Inference 2: Genetic changes such as those made to the size, colour, and shape of certain flower species could affect the species of bee dependent on it.
With this understanding in mind, let’s take a look at the option statements.

Answer Choices
A
It is by studying the species of flower a bee pollinates that entomologists determine the exact body size of the bee and the species it belongs to.
Incorrect - No information given
The passage states only general facts about bees. It doesn’t give us any information on the methodology followed by entomologists.
B
It is likely that a short tongued bee may have a problem drinking nectar from a flower that has a longer than average depth but a long tongued bee can easily sap the nectar of any kind of flower.
Incorrect - No information given
C
The passage clearly states that both short-tongued and long-tongued bees drink nectar only from flowers suited to their tongue size. Thus we can’t conclude that long tongued bees can sap the nectar of any kind of flower.
Drastic changes in the flora of a land could affect the existence of certain bee species.
Correct
This option is written along the lines of our pre-thinking Inference 2. Since these bees are dependent on only certain flowers, significant changes in the plant species of an area could affect their survival.
D
The type of honey produced by the bees depends heavily on the flowers they pollinate.
Incorrect - No information given
The passage doesn’t give us any information to conclude on the type of honey produced by the bees.
E
Across various bee species, the kind of flower a particular type of bee pollinates is exclusive from that pollinated by another type of bee.
Incorrect - No information given
The passages make no distinction between the pollination of flowers by one bee species and that by another type of bee. Thus the given information can’t be concluded from the passage.

Directions: Read the Passage carefully and answer the question as follow. The annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniences of life which it annually consumes, and which consist always either in the immediate produce of that labour, or in what is purchased with that produce from other nations. Accordingly, therefore, as this produce, or what is purchased with it, bears a greater or smaller proportion to the number of those who are to consume it, the nation will be better or worse supplied with all the necessaries and conveniences for which it has occasion. But this proportion must in every nation be regulated by two different circumstances: first, by the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which its labour is generally applied; and, second, by the proportion of the number of people who are employed in useful labour to that of those who are not so employed. Whatever be the soil, climate, or extent of territory of any particular nation, the abundance or scantiness of its annual supply must, in that particular situation, depend upon these two circumstances. Moreover, the abundance or scantiness of this supply seems to depend more upon the former of those two circumstances than upon the latter. Among the savage nations of hunters and fishers, every individual who is able to work is more or less employed in useful labour, and endeavours to provide, as well as he can, the necessities and conveniences of life, for himself, and such of his family or tribe as are either too old, or too young, or too infirm to go hunting and fishing. Such nations, however, are so miserably poor, that, from mere want, they are frequently reduced, or at least think themselves reduced, to the necessity sometimes of directly destroying, and sometimes of abandoning their infants, their old people, and those afflicted with lingering diseases, to perish with hunger, or to be devoured by wild beasts. Among civilized and thriving nations, on the contrary, though a great number of people do not labour at all, many of whom consume the produce of ten times, frequently of a hundred times, more labour than the greater part of those who work; yet the produce of the whole labour of the society is so great, that all are often abundantly supplied and a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessities and conveniences of life than is possible for any savage to acquire.Q.According to the information in the passage, each of the following could be a characteristic of a savage nation EXCEPT
