Define an ecosystem?
System that includes all living organisms (biotic factors) in an area as well as its physical environment (abiotic factors) functioning together as a unit. Supplement. Define an ecosystem?
Ecosystem:

An ecosystem refers to a complex community of living organisms, their physical environment, and the interrelationships between them. It encompasses both the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components of a specific geographic area or habitat. Ecosystems can range in size from small ponds to vast forests or even the entire planet. They play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature and supporting life on Earth.

Components of an Ecosystem:

An ecosystem consists of the following components:

1. Producers: These are the autotrophic organisms, mainly plants, that produce their own food through photosynthesis. They convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen, forming the base of the food chain.

2. Consumers: Consumers are heterotrophic organisms that obtain energy by consuming other organisms. They can be classified into three main types:
- Herbivores: These animals feed on plants and are known as primary consumers.
- Carnivores: Carnivores are animals that primarily feed on other animals. They can be secondary or tertiary consumers.
- Omnivores: Omnivores have a diet that includes both plants and animals.

3. Decomposers: Decomposers are organisms that break down dead organic matter into simpler substances. They play a vital role in recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. Examples include bacteria and fungi.

4. Abiotic Factors: These are non-living components of the ecosystem that influence the living organisms. They include temperature, sunlight, water availability, soil composition, and pH levels.

Interactions in an Ecosystem:

Within an ecosystem, various interactions occur between organisms and their environment:

1. Food Chain: A food chain represents the transfer of energy and nutrients from one organism to another. It starts with producers and progresses through different trophic levels, ending with decomposers.

2. Food Web: A food web is a more complex representation of feeding relationships within an ecosystem. It consists of interconnected food chains, illustrating the multiple paths through which energy flows.

3. Symbiosis: Symbiotic relationships occur when two different species interact and live together. Examples include mutualism (both species benefit), commensalism (one benefits, the other is unaffected), and parasitism (one benefits, the other is harmed).

Importance of Ecosystems:

Ecosystems provide numerous benefits and services to humans and the environment:

1. Biodiversity: Ecosystems support a vast array of plant and animal species, contributing to biodiversity and genetic diversity.

2. Climate Regulation: Ecosystems play a crucial role in regulating climate patterns by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.

3. Water Cycle: Ecosystems help maintain the water cycle by retaining and purifying water through processes such as evaporation, transpiration, and precipitation.

4. Soil Formation: Ecosystems contribute to soil formation and fertility through the decomposition of organic matter.

5. Recreation and Aesthetics:
