Which of the following does not form an acidic salt?a)Phosphoric acidb...
Acidic Salt

An acidic salt is formed by the partial neutralization of an acid where the anion of the acid retains acidic properties.

For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it forms sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (H2O).

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

In this reaction, the hydrogen ion (H+) from the acid combines with the hydroxide ion (OH-) from the base to form water, leaving behind the sodium ion (Na+) and the chloride ion (Cl-). The chloride ion (Cl-) retains the acidic properties of the original acid and hence, sodium chloride (NaCl) is an acidic salt.

Answer

Out of the given options, acetic acid (CH3COOH) does not form an acidic salt. When acetic acid (CH3COOH) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it forms sodium acetate (CH3COONa) and water (H2O).

CH3COOH + NaOH → CH3COONa + H2O

In this reaction, the hydrogen ion (H+) from the acid combines with the hydroxide ion (OH-) from the base to form water, leaving behind the sodium ion (Na+) and the acetate ion (CH3COO-). The acetate ion (CH3COO-) does not retain the acidic properties of the original acid and hence, sodium acetate (CH3COONa) is a basic salt.

Therefore, the correct answer is option B, i.e. acetic acid.
Community Answer
