    Years, determine the basic dynamic load rating (C) of the bearing if the reliability factor (a) is 90%.

    Solution:

    Given:

    Equivalent radial load for 10% of time = 3 kN
    Equivalent radial load for 20% of time = 2 kN
    Equivalent radial load for 30% of time = 1 kN
    Total life expected for the bearing = 20 years
    Reliability factor = 0.9

    Let us assume that the bearing operates for 1 cycle during its total life of 20 years. The duration of one cycle can be calculated as follows:

    Duration of one cycle = (10% of time at 3 kN load) + (20% of time at 2 kN load) + (30% of time at 1 kN load) + (40% of time at no load)
    = (0.1 x 1) + (0.2 x 1) + (0.3 x 1) + (0.4 x 1)
    = 1

    Therefore, the bearing operates for 1 cycle during its total life of 20 years.

    The equivalent dynamic load (P) acting on the bearing can be calculated using the following formula:

    P = (X1.F1 + X2.F2 + X3.F3)/1000

    Where,
    X1, X2, X3 = Percentage of time at respective loads
    F1, F2, F3 = Respective loads in kN

    Substituting the given values, we get:

    P = (0.1 x 3 + 0.2 x 2 + 0.3 x 1)/1000
    = 0.04 kN

    The basic dynamic load rating (C) of the bearing can be calculated using the following formula:

    C = (P.L10)1/3/a

    Where,
    L10 = Basic rating life in millions of revolutions

    We know that the total life expected for the bearing is 20 years. Therefore, the basic rating life can be calculated as follows:

    L10 = (60 x 20 x 106)/N

    Where,
    N = Speed of the shaft in revolutions per minute

    Since the speed of the shaft is not given, let us assume it to be 1000 rpm.

    L10 = (60 x 20 x 106)/1000
    = 1.2 x 106

    Substituting the given values, we get:

    C = (0.04 x 1.2 x 106)1/3/0.9
    = 9.71 kN

    Therefore, the basic dynamic load rating (C) of the bearing is 9.71 kN.
