    Given data:

    Gear ratio (i) = 10 : 1
    Power transmitted (P) = 500 kW
    Speed of pinion (N1) = 1800 rpm
    Module (m) = 8 mm
    Pressure angle (ϕ) = 22.5°

    We need to find:

    (a) Speed of gear (N2)
    (b) Pitch circle diameter of pinion (d1)
    (c) Pitch circle diameter of gear (d2)
    (d) Face width of gear (b)

    Solution:

    (a) Speed of gear (N2):

    We know that,

    i = N2/N1

    ⇒ N2 = i × N1

    ⇒ N2 = 10 × 1800

    ⇒ N2 = 18000 rpm

    Therefore, the speed of gear is 18000 rpm.

    (b) Pitch circle diameter of pinion (d1):

    We know that,

    P = (2πNT)/60

    Where,
    T = Torque transmitted
    N = Speed in rpm

    For pinion,

    T1 = (P × 60)/(2πN1)

    We also know that,

    T1/T2 = i

    ⇒ T2 = T1/i

    For gear,

    T2 = (P × 60)/(2πN2)

    ⇒ T1/i = (P × 60)/(2πN2)

    ⇒ T1/10 = (500 × 10^3 × 60)/(2π × 18000)

    ⇒ T1 = 261.8 kNm

    Now,

    d1 = m × z1

    Where,
    z1 = Number of teeth on pinion

    We know that,

    i = z2/z1

    ⇒ z2 = i × z1

    ⇒ z2 = 10 × z1

    We also know that,

    z1 + z2 = m × (N1 + N2)/2π

    ⇒ z1 + 10z1 = 8 × (1800 + 18000)/2π

    ⇒ 11z1 = 454.5

    ⇒ z1 = 41.32

    Therefore, the pitch circle diameter of pinion is

    d1 = m × z1 = 8 × 41.32 = 330.56 mm

    (c) Pitch circle diameter of gear (d2):

    We know that,

    d2 = m × z2

    ⇒ d2 = 8 × 10z1

    ⇒ d2 = 8 × 10 × 41.32

    ⇒ d2 = 3305.6 mm

    Therefore, the pitch circle diameter of gear is 3305.6 mm.

    (d) Face width of gear (b):

    We know that,

    b = 12m

    ⇒ b = 12 × 8

    ⇒ b = 96 mm

    Therefore, the face width of gear is 96 mm.
