Given data:
Upgrade = 1.5%
Downgrade = 0.5%
Rate of change of grade = 0.2% per 20m chain

To find: Length of vertical curve

Solution:

Vertical curve is used to connect two different grade lines with a smooth transition in between. It is used to provide the driver with a comfortable and safe ride as it eliminates the sudden change in grade.

The length of the vertical curve is calculated by the following formula:

L = (K x V2) / (2 x g)

Where,
L = Length of vertical curve
K = Rate of change of grade (in percentage per unit length)
V = Design speed (in km/hr)
g = Acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s2)

Assuming the design speed to be 50 km/hr, we can calculate the value of K as follows:

K = Rate of change of grade / (Length of curve / 20)

K = 0.2 / (L / 20)

L / 20 = 0.2 / 0.002

L / 20 = 100

L = 200m

Therefore, the length of the vertical curve is 200m.

Hence, option (B) is the correct answer.

L = (g2 - g1)/r
g2 = 1.5% (+ve since upgrade)
g1 = -0.5% (-ve since downgrade)
r = 0.2% per 20m
  = (0.2/20)% per m
  = 0.01% per m
L = [1.5 - (-0.5)]/0.01 = 200 m
