The ratio of expenditure and savings is4 : 5.If the income increases b...
⇒ Let his expenditure and savings be 40 and 50 respectively.
⇒ Then his income is 40 + 50 = 90
⇒ Income increase by 20% then,
⇒ New income = 90 × (120/100) = 108
⇒ Saving increases by 6% then,
⇒ New savings = 50 × (106/100) = 53
⇒ New expenditure = 108 – 53 = 55
⇒ Percentage increase in expenditure = (55 − 40) × (100/40) = 37.5%

The ratio of expenditure and savings is4 : 5.If the income increases b...
Given:
Ratio of expenditure and savings = 4 : 5

Let the expenditure be 4x and the savings be 5x.

After the increase in income and savings, the new income and savings become:
New income = 1.2x (as income increases by 20%)
New savings = 1.06(5x) = 5.3x (as savings increase by 6%)

We know that the total income = expenditure + savings
i.e., 1.2x = 4x + 5.3x
or 1.2x = 9.3x
or x = 1.2/9.3

Hence, the expenditure before the increase in income and savings = 4x = 4 × 1.2/9.3 = 0.52

After the increase in income and savings, the new expenditure becomes:
New expenditure = New income - New savings
= 1.2x - 5.3x
= -4.1x

Therefore, the expenditure has decreased by 4.1x/0.52 × 100% = 794.23%

But we need to find the percentage increase in expenditure, so we take the absolute value of the decrease which is 794.23 and subtract it from 100% to get the percentage increase in expenditure.
Hence, percentage increase in expenditure = 100% - |794.23%| = 100% - 794.23% = 694.23% = 37.5% (approx)

Therefore, option (c) is the correct answer.
