Threshold Odour Number (TON)

The threshold odour number (TON) is the minimum number of volumes of water required to be added to a certain volume of sample so that the odour of the sample is just barely detectable to the sense of smell.

Given Information

- Water sample volume = 40 ml
- Dilution volume = 200 ml
- Odour is just barely detectable

Calculation

- TON = (V2/V1) - 1
- V1 = volume of sample = 40 ml
- V2 = volume of dilution = 200 ml
- TON = (200/40) - 1 = 4

The TON value obtained is for a dilution of 1:5. Since the odour is just barely detectable, the TON value needs to be doubled to get the TON value for a dilution of 1:10.

- TON = 4 x 2 = 8

Therefore, the correct answer is option B, 5.
