Properties of Physical Adsorption:
• Higher the pressure, more the adsorption: Physical adsorption is a process that occurs on the surface of a solid. When the pressure is increased, the number of gas molecules striking the surface of the solid also increases. Hence, the adsorption increases with an increase in pressure.
• Greater the surface area, more the adsorption: Physical adsorption is a surface phenomenon. The adsorption of gas molecules on the surface of a solid is directly proportional to the surface area. Hence, the greater the surface area of the solid, the more will be the adsorption.
• Lower the temperature, more the adsorption: Physical adsorption is an exothermic process. This means that the heat is evolved during this process. When the temperature is lowered, the heat evolved is absorbed, and the adsorption increases. Hence, the lower the temperature, the more will be the adsorption.
• Unilayer adsorption occurs: Physical adsorption occurs in layers. However, the thickness of the layer is not fixed. The first layer of adsorbed molecules is called a unilayer. This layer is directly in contact with the surface of the solid.
