Two trains 108 m and 112 m in length are running towards each other on...
Solution:

Given,

Length of first train = 108 m

Length of second train = 112 m

Speed of first train = 45 km/hr

Speed of second train = 54 km/hr

To find: Time taken to cross each other after they meet

Let the two trains meet at a point A and cross each other at a point B.

Distance travelled by first train to reach point A = Length of first train = 108 m

Distance travelled by second train to reach point A = Length of second train = 112 m

Total distance travelled by both trains to reach point A = 108 m + 112 m = 220 m

Relative speed of two trains = Speed of first train + Speed of second train

= (45 + 54) km/hr

= 99 km/hr

= (99 x 5/18) m/s [1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s]

= 27.5 m/s

Time taken by two trains to meet at point A = Distance/Relative speed

= 220/27.5

= 8 seconds

To cross each other, the distance to be covered will be the sum of the lengths of two trains.

Distance to be covered = Length of first train + Length of second train

= 108 m + 112 m

= 220 m

Relative speed of two trains = Speed of first train + Speed of second train

= (45 + 54) km/hr

= 99 km/hr

= (99 x 5/18) m/s [1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s]

= 27.5 m/s

Time taken by two trains to cross each other = Distance/Relative speed

= 220/27.5

= 8 seconds

Hence, the time taken to cross each other after they meet is 8 seconds.
