India can be divided into the following major physiographic divisions:

1. The Himalayan region
2. The Northern Plains
3. The Peninsular plateau
4. The Indian Desert
5. The Coastal Plains
6. The Islands

The Himalayan Region

The Himalayan region is the youngest and tallest mountain range in the world. It stretches over 2,500 km from the Indus River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east. The Himalayas consist of three parallel ranges, the Great Himalayas, the Lesser Himalayas and the Outer Himalayas.

The Peninsular plateau is a vast region lying to the south of the Northern Plains. It is bounded by the Eastern Ghats in the east, the Western Ghats in the west, and the Satpura, Maikal, and Vindhya ranges in the north.

1. Plateaus: The Peninsular Plateau is a vast region of plateaus, including the Deccan Plateau, the Malwa Plateau, and the Chota Nagpur Plateau.
