Solution:
Given, 14, 16, 35, and 42 are not in proportion.

Let the fourth term be 'x', then the terms are in proportion if,

14 : 16 :: 35 : 42

⇒ 14/16 = 35/42

⇒ 21/24 = 5/6

⇒ 21/4 = 5

⇒ 21 = 20

⇒ 1 = 20 - 21 = -1

Therefore, the terms are not in proportion.

To find the fourth term for which the given terms will be in proportion, we can use the product of means = product of extremes.

Let the fourth term be 'x'.

Then, 14 : 16 :: 35 : x

By the product of means = product of extremes,

⇒ 14 × x = 16 × 35

⇒ x = (16 × 35) / 14

⇒ x = 40

Hence, the fourth term for which the given terms will be in proportion is 40.

Therefore, the correct option is (B) 40.
