The Government of India (GoI) and the World Bank(WB) have inked a $ 450 million (mn) loan agreement to support Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY) – National Groundwater Management Improvement Program that will be implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh (UP) and cover 78 districts.

The scheme aims at sustainable ground water management with community participation in select over-exploited and ground water stressed areas in 7 states (Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, M.P, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and U.P). These states represent about 25% of the total number of over-exploited, critical and semi critical blocks in terms of ground water in India.
This is as a central sector scheme with a total outlay of ₹6000 Cr. and it is proposed to be implemented with World Bank assistance
