A 20% ethanol solution is mixed with another ethanol solution, say, S of unknown concentration in the proportion 1:3 by volume. This mixture is then mixed with an equal volume of 20% ethanol solution. If the resultant mixture is a 31.25% ethanol solution, then the unknown concentration of S is
Correct answer is '50'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A 20% ethanol solution is mixed with another ethanol solution, say, S ...
Let the volume of the first and the second solution be 100 and 300.
When they are mixed, quantity of ethanol in the mixture = (20 + 300S)
Let this solution be mixed with equal volume i.e. 400 of third solution in which the strength of ethanol is 20%.
So, the quantity of ethanol in the final solution = (20 + 300S + 80) = (300S + 100)
It is given that, 31.25% of 800 = (300S + 100) or, 300S + 100 = 250

Hence, 50 is the correct answer.

A 20% ethanol solution is mixed with another ethanol solution, say, S ...
Solution:

Let us assume that the unknown concentration of solution S is x%.

Step 1: Mixing 20% ethanol solution with solution S

- Volume of 20% ethanol solution = 1
- Volume of solution S = 3
- Total volume of mixture = 4
- Therefore, the concentration of ethanol in the mixture = (0.2 x 1 + 0.x x 3)/4 = (0.2 + 0.75x)/4

Step 2: Mixing the mixture with an equal volume of 20% ethanol solution

- Volume of the mixture = 4
- Volume of 20% ethanol solution = 4
- Total volume of resultant mixture = 8
- Let the concentration of ethanol in the solution S be x%
- Concentration of ethanol in the mixture from step 1 = (0.2 + 0.75x)/4
- Concentration of ethanol in the 20% ethanol solution = 0.2
- Concentration of ethanol in the resultant mixture = 31.25%
- Therefore, (0.2 + 0.75x)/4 + 0.2 = 31.25/100
- Solving the equation, we get x = 50

Hence, the unknown concentration of solution S is 50%.

A 20% ethanol solution is mixed with another ethanol solution, say, S ...
Suppose A solution is 100 ml
so B is 300 ml
so C will be ( 100 + 300 + same quantity ie 400) so 80O

out of 800 total 31.25 % is ethanol so 250 ml is ethanol

a contain 20 ml, c contain (20*4)
remaining 150 ml in 300 ml so 50%

so this cal in mind, will take 30 sec at most
