Collenchyma vs. Sclerenchyma
- Cell Structure:
Collenchyma cells have thickened corners due to the deposition of cellulose and pectin. They have living protoplasts and elongated cell walls.
Sclerenchyma cells, on the other hand, have heavily lignified cell walls with no living protoplasts. They are dead cells at maturity. - Cell Arrangement:
Collenchyma cells are generally arranged in strands beneath the epidermis of young stems and petioles. They provide support to growing parts of the plant.
Sclerenchyma cells are scattered throughout different plant tissues, providing structural support and rigidity to mature parts of the plant. - Function:
Collenchyma cells provide flexibility and mechanical support to the plant while allowing for growth. They are involved in the elongation of plant organs.
Sclerenchyma cells provide rigidity and strength to plant parts, especially in areas that have stopped growing. They are responsible for the hardness of seed coats and nut shells. - Cell Wall Composition:
Collenchyma cell walls contain cellulose and pectin, which provide flexibility and support during growth.
Sclerenchyma cell walls are thickened with lignin, making them rigid and impermeable to water.
