what is photosynthesis Related: Photosynthesis (with Short Questions)...
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods with the help of chlorophyll. The process takes place in the chloroplasts of the plant cells. It helps in the production of glucose and oxygen which are vital for the survival of all living organisms.

Process of Photosynthesis
The process of photosynthesis can be divided into two stages - Light-dependent and Light-independent reactions.

Light-dependent reactions
- These reactions occur in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplasts.
- The energy from the sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll pigments and converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH.
- Water is split into hydrogen and oxygen by the energy from sunlight.
- Oxygen is released as a by-product.

Light-independent reactions
- These reactions occur in the stroma of the chloroplasts.
- The ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions are used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose.
- This process is also known as the Calvin cycle.

Importance of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is important for the following reasons:
- It is the primary source of food for all living organisms.
- It is responsible for the production of oxygen which is essential for respiration.
- It helps in regulating the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
- It is the basis of the food chain.

Conclusion
Photosynthesis is a vital process that is responsible for the survival of all living organisms. It helps in the production of glucose and oxygen which are essential for the functioning of all life forms. Understanding the process of photosynthesis is essential for understanding the importance of plants in our ecosystem.
