Problem Statement

A single block brake as shown in figure. Has the drum diameter 250mm.the angle of contact is90 degree. And the coefficient of friction between the drum and the lining is 0.35. If the torque transmitted by the brake is 70 N-m. Find the force p required to operate the brake?

Solution

Given data:

  • Drum diameter (D) = 250 mm

  • Angle of contact (θ) = 90°

  • Coefficient of friction (μ) = 0.35

  • Torque transmitted by brake (T) = 70 N-m

Step 1: Calculation of Force Applied by Brake Lining (F)

Using the formula for torque:

T = F x r

where, r = radius of drum = D/2 = 125 mm

Plugging in the given values:

70 N-m = F x 0.125 m

Therefore, F = 560 N

Step 2: Calculation of Force Required to Operate Brake (P)

The force required to operate the brake can be found using the formula:

P = F / μ

Plugging in the values:

P = 560 N / 0.35 = 1600 N

Conclusion

The force required to operate the brake is 1600 N.
